The Madison American Legion baseball team headed to Watertown this weekend for the Tri-State Tournament, co-hosted by the Watertown Shockers and the Oconomowoc Five-O's. On Friday morning, Madison took on the host Watertown Shockers and came away with a 6-2 victory.
Madison sent Zach Furniss to the mound for his first start of the summer, and he did not disappoint. Furniss threw a 7-inning complete game, giving up just two runs on 5 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2 to earn the victory. With the win, Furniss improved to 1-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to a team second-best 2.96.
Madison got on the board first in the top of the 1st inning when Jack Reiland doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball, and was brought in on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Sam Abbott. The Shockers responded in the 3rd inning by adding two runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead.
Madison added a single run to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the 4th when Taylor Carlson lead off the inning with a solo homerun to left field. Madison then added 3 more runs to take a 5-2 lead when Jack Reiland singled and Sam Abbott walked, and Luke Yapp singled to bring in Reiland. Taylor Carlson then picked up his 2nd RBI of the evening on a bases-loaded single which scored Abbott, and Yapp would score later in the inning on a bases-loaded hit by pitch courtesy of Chris Anderson. Madison added a single insurance run in the top of the 7th inning. Ben Jennings singled, and Josh Hainzinger entered the game at 1B as a courtesy runner. Kevin Cobb then singled to put Hainzinger on 2B, and was moved to 3B on a walk by Louie Ellis. Jack Reiland then pushed Hainzinger across the plate with a fielder's choice. Final score Madison 6, Watertown 2.
The second game of the day saw Madison take on Hartford. Madison sent Taylor Carlson to the mound, and he built off of his previous starts this summer with arguably his best pitching performance so far. Carlson pitched a 7-inning complete game, giving up 1 unearned run on just 4 hits while striking out 3 Hartford hitters and not allowing a walk. With the win, Carlson improved to a team-leading 4-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.56.
Offensively, Hartford struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring a single unearned run to take a 1-0 lead. Madison got on the board in the top of the 4th inning when Sam Abbott and Luke Yapp both singled and advanced to 2B and 3B on a passed ball. Kevin Cobb then singled to bring in Yapp and Abbott.
Madison added 3 more runs in the top of the 5th inning to increase their lead to 5-1, and eventually added three more runs in the last two at bats to cruise to an 8-1 victory.
Madison then faced a tough Norwood, IL team on Saturday morning, and hung tough with them until the end of the game. Madison was powered by the pitching of Sam Wood, who pitched the first 6 innings scoreless until the Norwood bats started finding holes in the infield and eventually posted 5 runs in the 7th inning to take a 5-0 win.
In Saturday's night game, Madison took on Janesville for the chance to play in the Tri-State tournament championship game. Madison sent Chas Schuster to the mound, and he struggled in the early innings, giving up 6 runs in the first 5 innings, but Schuster found a "second-wind" and shut down Janesville the rest of the game en route to a win to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Janesville struck first in the top of the 1st with three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. Madison responded with a single run in the bottom of the 1st to cut the Janesville lead to 3-1. Janesville then added two more runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 5-1 lead. Madison cut the lead to 3 in the bottom of the 4th when Nick Zwieg grounded out the shortstop to score Josh Hainzinger. Janesville added a single run courtesy of a solo homerun to increase their lead back to 4 at 6-2. Madison added a single run in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead back to 3 at 6-3. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Madison added 3 runs to tie the game at 6-6 couresty of singles by Josh Hainzinger and Nick Zwieg, and an RBI double by Kody Parman. Chris Anderson pushed across Madison's third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Madison and Janesville swapped scoreless innings in the 7th, and Madison also shut down Janesville in the top of the 8th. Madison immediately put pressure on the Janesville defense in the bottom of the 7th when Kody Parman tripled with one out. Chris Anderson and Luke Yapp were then both intentially walked to load the bases, and Taylor Carlson drove in the winning run with the bases loaded to give Madison a 7-6 extra-innings victory. With the win, Madison advances to the Tri-State Tournament championship game on Sunday at 1PM in Watertown.
After going 3-1 in the first two days of the Tri-State Tournament, Madison improved to 10-5 on the season.
