After going 3-1 in their first 4 games of the Tri-State Tournament, Madison Legion faced Norwood, IL in a rematch for the Tri-State Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon. Norwood defeated Madison 5-0 on Saturday morning.
Madison sent Zach Furniss to the mound for his second start of the weekend, and he gave Madison a boost with his continued impressive pitching, going 6 innings, giving up just 3 runs on 6 hits and striking out 2 Norwood hitters. Taylor Carlson, Friday's second game starter, came into the game to pitch a scoreless 7th inning, striking out 1 Norwood hitter and earning his first save of the season. Furniss earned the win and improved to 2-1 on the season.
Offensively, Norwood struck first in the top of the 4th inning, pushing across a single run to take a 1-0 lead. Madison responded in the bottom of the 4th inning when Luke Yapp led off the inning with a walk, and Taylor Carlson doubled to bring Yapp across the plate to tie the game at 1-1. Madison took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the 5th inning when Tony Grannis led off the inning with a double, Nick Zwieg laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move Grannis to 3B, and Kody Parman brought home Grannis on a groundball to the Norwood shortstop. Down by 1 run, Norwood responded in the top of the 6th with two runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, Luke Yapp led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Josh Hainzinger singled to score Yapp, and Ben Jennings doubled to right centerfield to bring home Hainzinger and give Madison a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th inning. Madison shut the door in the bottom of the inning and earned a 4-3 victory over Norwood to capture the Tri-State Tournament championship.
With the win, Madison improved to 11-5 on the season, and will host Mauston on Tuesday, July 12th at 11:00 AM at the "Duck Pond" at Warner Park.
