Madison Legion was back in action on Tuesday evening as they headed to Beloit to play a single game with Beloit Legion at Pohlman Field, home of the Minnesota Twins single-A affiliate Beloit Snappers.
Madison sent Josh Hainzinger to the mound for his third appearance of the summer, and second start of the season. Hainzinger pitched 3.1 innings, giving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits. Chaz Mohr made his second appearance of the summer and pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, walking one and striking out one. Kevin Cobb pitched the sixth inning for Madison, and gave up no runs on 1 hit in his 1.0 innings of work.
Madison struck first in the top of the 1st inning as Nick Zwieg doubled, Taylor Carlson walked, and Luke Yapp doubled to bring in Zwieg. Sam Abbott then singled to bring in Carlson, and Chris Anderson drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Yapp and give Madison a 3-0 lead. Madison struck again in the top of the 3rd with a single run when Chris Anderson grounded out to short which allowed Carlson, who singled earlier in the inning, to score.
Beloit responded in the bottom of the third with 3 runs of their own to tie the game at 3 each, and exploded for 5 more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-4 lead after 4 innings.
Madison started to fight their way back in the top of the 5th as they added 2 more runs fueled by singles from Carlson and Yapp, and an RBI 2-0ut single by Ben Jennings. Beloit added a single run in the bottom of the 5th to make the score 9-6.
Madison added another single run in the top of the 6th when Jack Reiland walked, Zwieg stole 2B after reaching on a hit by pitch, and Carlson drove home Reiland on a sacrifice fly to center field. After 6 innings, Madison trailed beloit 9-7.
In Madison's last half inning, they found themselves trailing by two runs. Abbott began the 7th with a walk, and was moved to third on a double by Anderson. Jennings then drove in Abbott to cut the lead to just 1. Reiland later singled in the inning, but Madison was unable to push across the tying run and ended up losing a close game to Beloit by a final score of 9-8.
With the loss, Madison drops to 5-3 on the season, and will be back in action on Wednesday, June 29th when they head to Burlington for a single game starting at 6:00 PM.
