Madison Holds Off Burlington Rally to Take 5-4 Win

Madison headed to Burlington on Wednesday evening for a single game with the Burlington Diablos. Madison sent Chas Schuster to the mound for his third start of the summer, and he built upon his previous two starts, going the distance for his third win of the summer to improve to 3-0 on the season. Schuster pitched 7.0 innings, gave up 4 earned runs, struck out 6 Burlington hitters and walked two.

Madison took the lead in the top of the 1st inning when Nick Zwieg was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and was brought home on an error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Jack Reiland. Burlington took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with two runs of their own.

Madison responded in the top of the 4th inning, collecting 4 runs on 1 hit, 1 error and 2 walks. Jack Reiland lead off the inning when he reached on an error by the shortstop. After Reiland scored on a passed ball, Sam Abbott and Ben Jennings then walked to give Madison the bases loaded with two outs. Zach Addamo then delivered a clutch 2-out RBI double down the right field line to give Madison a 5-2 lead.

Burlington responded with two more runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Madison lead to just 1 at 5-4. Behind the arm of Schuster, Madison was able to shut the Diablos down in the 7th and preserve the 5-4 victory.

With the win, Madison improves to 6-3 on the season and will travel to Oconomowoc on Friday, July 1st for a single game starting at 6 PM at Roosevelt Field.
