Madison Falls Just Short at Oconomowoc

Madison Legion traveled to Roosevelt Field in Oconomowoc on Friday evening to take on the "Five-O's". Madison sent Taylor Carlson to the mound for his 3rd start of the summer. Carlson pitched 6 strong innings, giving 3 earned runs on 9 hits, while striking out 2 Oconomowoc hitters in a no-decision.

After Madison was unable to score in the top of the first inning, Oconomowoc jumped out to a 3-0 lead when they posted 3 runs on 3 hits off of Carlson in the bottom of the first. Madison responded in the top of the 2nd inning when Chris Anderson led off the inning with a solo homerun, his first of the summer, to put Madison on the board. Madison added another single run in the top of the 3rd when Tony Grannis and advanced to third on a passed ball, and Taylor Carlson grounded out to second base to bring Grannis home.

Oconomowoc responded with a single run in the 4th and 5th innings to make it a 5-2 game after 5 complete innings. Madison cut the Oconomowoc lead to 5-4 when they posted 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning when Luke Yapp singled, and Zach Addamo doubled to bring in Yapp. Addamo would score later in the inning when Kody Parman reached on a throwing error by the Oconomowoc third basemen.

Madison shut down Oconomowoc in the bottom of the 6th, and took their first lead of the game in the top of the 7th inning. Nick Zwieg reached on an error by the third basemen, Taylor Carlson singled, and Luke Yapp singled to bring in Zwieg. Yapp then stole 2B, and Carlson scored on a groundout to the shortstop by Chris Anderson. Later in the inning, Zach Addamo reached on an error by the second basemen which scored Yapp. After 6 and 1/2 innings, Madison lead 7-5.

Oconomowoc stood up to the task of being down by 2 runs in their last half inning. Oconomowoc loaded the bases with no outs to start the bottom of the 7th and pushed across two runs to tie the game at 7-7. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Madison pitcher Zach Furniss recorded two straight outs without allowing the winning run to score. After a Furniss strikeout for the 2nd out, an Oconomowoc hitter put a great swing on a good pitch by Furniss which fell for a single to give Oconomowoc the 8-7 victory.

With the loss, Madison drops to 6-4 on the season. Madison will be back in action after the 4th of July weekend when they head to the "Tin Dome" in Sauk City for a 5:30 pm game vs. Sauk Prairie on Wednesday, July 6th.
