After a 1-1 start at the Andy Smith Memorial Tournament in Kenosha, Madison Legion responded with 2 straight victories on Sunday to capture the Silver Division championship. Madison Legion finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, and finished in 3rd place overall out of 12 teams in the tournament field.
Game 1 matched Madison with Baraboo. Taylor Carlson started on the mound for Madison, and threw his second complete game in as many chances this season. Taylor gave up just 1 run in 7.0 innings of work on 5 hits, while striking out 3 Baraboo hitters along the way. With the win, Carlson improved to 2-0 on the season and currently has a stellar 1.50 ERA.
Offensively, Baraboo struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead. Madison responded in the top of the 4th when Luke Yapp and Taylor Carlson both singled to put runners on 1st & 3rd. Ben Jennings followed with a single to bring home Yapp and tie the game at 1 a piece.
Baraboo and Madison traded scoreless innings until the top of the 6th when Chris Anderson reached on an error, and Kody Parman singled to give Madison runners on 1B & 2B with 2 outs. '11 Verona graduate and Kankakee Community College recruit Josh Hainzinger then hit a clutch, 2-out, 3-run homer to LF to give Madison a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th.
Carlson cruised from there, securing the 4-1 victory for Madison and a spot in the Silver Division championship game. With the win, Madison improved to 4-2 on the season.
The late game on Sunday saw Madison take on the Green Bay Shockers. Madison sent Chas Schuster to the mound for his 2nd start of the summer. Schuster pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up just 4 hits and striking out 2 Green Bay batters. Schuster's effort earned him the win, and he improved to 2-0 on the season and dropped his ERA down to an impressive 1.89.
Offensively, Madison struck first in the top of the 1st inning when Tony Grannis walked and Nick Zwieg singled to put runners on 1st & 3rd with no outs. Zwieg then stole 2B and Grannis scored on the throw to 2nd to give Madison a 1-0 lead. Madison continued their offensive production in the top of the 2nd when Ben Jennings singled, Kody Parman walked, and Jack Reiland grounded out to the pitcher to move Jennings and Parman to 2B & 3B with 1 out. Grannis then walked to load the bases, and Zwieg singled home Jennings to give Madison a 2-0 lead. Sam Abbott followed with a bases-loaded walk to push home Parman, and Yapp singled to bring home Grannis and Zwieg and increase the Madison lead to 5-0. Abbot would later score in the inning with two outs when Taylor Carlson drew a bases loaded walk.
Madison headed into the top of the 3rd inning with a 6-0 lead, but was not comfortable there as they added two more runs on the power of a single by Sam Abbott. Madison continued to hold Green Bay in check, and added 3 more runs in the top of the 7th inning on the power of singles from Luke Yapp and Taylor Carlson, and a fielder's choice groundout from Chris Anderson.
'11 Madison LaFollette graduate Zach Furniss took the mound in the bottom of the 4th inning with two outs, and cruised through the final 3.1 innings, giving up no runs or hits, striking out 3 Green Bay hitters. Final score: Madison 11, Green Bay 0.
With the win, Madison improved to 5-2 on the season and earned the Silver Division Championship in the Andy Smith Memorial Tournament. Madison will be back in action on Tuesday, June 28th when they head to Pohlman Field to take on Beloit at 5:15 PM.
